I tuned in to see the TSV this morning. Leah held up a DVD featuring photos of women on the cover and inside who were bare from the waist up and holding their arms over their breasts. While the camera was focused on those photos, she told us to give the gift of WEN this holiday season. I can only imagine the reactions of some of the people on my shopping list when that DVD came out of the box! Has Chaz ever explained why he decided to put those provocative photos on the DVD? It is not just paucity of those willing to pose in the nude; the very study of the human form is no longer central to the fine arts. There is a queer symmetry in the circle of busts placed at the entrance of Government Fine Arts College in Thiruvananthapuram -faces of men and women, weary and wrinkled, worn out by age and weather, drooping flesh holding on to sunken eyelids like fragments of human form ravaged by a contagious ailment. They bear a striking resemblance to figures carved out inside closed doors through lengthy sessions of life study by art students over the past few decades. Life models have become tiring imitations with students using the same set of models and passing on to the next batch like books soiled by trading hands across generations. The exclusive studio where students once worked with models for life and nude study has now turned into a storehouse of old paintings and sculptures. A lone nude sculpture shows an old woman with a bowed head and sagging body. Inside an art studio, students sketch a man in mundu and thorthu, sitting with one of his legs slightly atop the other, a posture he would maintain for hours and one he has done for years. Life models in the college had been peanut vendors and security guards but since early 90s nude study , an integral part of life study, has vanished completely.
Of all the jobs one can do nude it is surprisingly modest. The working relationship is completely dependant on trust. An artists working with a model has their reputation to consider, should their conduct be less than professional it could ruin their chances of ever working with another model, and alienate them from their community. This responsibility falls on the shoulders of the model as well, their conduct must be equally impeachable. The lines of professionalism can and do blur. Sometimes with fantastic results, amazing works of art are born. But this is the exception rather than the rule. There are many paths that may lead to working as a life model. I began working for artists in my teens while attending group life drawing classes. We had hired a model who continually failed to come to work, leaving us all sitting there pencils and sketchpads in hand and no model to draw from.
